If the thought of getting everyone ready for family photos makes you want to take a nap first, you’re not alone!
Between finding outfits everyone will actually wear, getting the kids dressed without a meltdown, remembering shoes and snacks, and hoping everyone cooperates for just a few minutes—family photos can feel like a lot.
But they don’t have to.
As a Hudson, WI family photographer, I want your family session to feel less like an event you have to survive and more like time set aside to enjoy your people. An outdoor family session gives us space to move, play, snuggle, explore, and capture the personalities that make your family yours.
And the best part? You don’t have to know how to pose.
What Is an Outdoor Family Session?
An outdoor family session is designed to capture your family naturally in a beautiful Hudson, WI setting. Rather than standing in a line and smiling at the camera for an hour, we’ll incorporate movement and connection into your photographs.
Think walking hand-in-hand, your kids running toward you, cuddling together, tossing little ones in the air, exploring the surroundings, and those quiet moments in between.
Of course, we’ll also capture a few classic family portraits looking at the camera. Those are the images grandparents will want on their walls!
But my goal is to create a gallery that tells the bigger story of your family—not just what everyone looked like, but what this season of life felt like.
What Does a Family Session Look Like from Start to Finish?
Before Your Session
Once you book your Hudson family photography session, I’ll help you prepare for the experience.
We’ll talk about the best location, the time of day, and what to wear. If you’re wondering how to coordinate everyone's outfits without making your family look overly matched, I’m here to help.
You don’t need to spend hours putting together the perfect Pinterest-worthy wardrobe. My goal is for everyone to feel comfortable and like themselves.
We’ll also choose a location that fits your family and the kind of images you’re hoping to create.
When You Arrive
You can take a breath.
There’s no expectation that your kids will immediately stand in the perfect spot and smile.
We’ll start by getting comfortable and letting everyone settle in. I’ll give your family simple prompts that encourage genuine interaction rather than asking you to memorize a list of poses.
And if your toddler is more interested in running than sitting still?
Perfect.
We’ll run with them.
If your baby needs a snack or your preschooler needs a little break, we’ll take one. Family sessions are meant to work around your family—not the other way around.
During the Session
This is where we let your family simply be together.
We might walk, play, cuddle, dance, explore, or have a little fun with the kids. I’ll guide you the entire time so you never have to wonder, “What am I supposed to do with my hands?”
There will be plenty of laughter and movement, along with quieter moments where we slow things down and capture those sweet connections.
And yes, there will probably be a little chaos.
That’s okay.
Some of my favorite family photographs happen in the moments parents might initially think are “messy”—the genuine laugh after someone makes a silly face, a child hiding behind Mom, or siblings completely absorbed in their own little world.
Those are the moments you’ll miss someday.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?
This is probably one of the biggest concerns I hear from parents.
What if they won't smile?
What if they run away?
What if they have a meltdown?
What if we can't get one good picture?
I promise—you are not the first family to arrive with a child who has decided today is the day they are absolutely done cooperating.
You don't need perfectly behaved children for beautiful family photos.
I work with kids where they are, using movement, play, connection, and age-appropriate prompts to keep the session relaxed. We’ll give them opportunities to be themselves while still creating the timeless portraits you came for.
And sometimes the photographs that aren't perfectly posed end up being the ones you love most.
Why Document Your Family Now?
Because this version of your family won't last forever.
The toddler who insists on being carried will eventually walk everywhere. The little hand that fits perfectly inside yours will grow. Your children will change, your routines will change, and someday you’ll look back and realize just how quickly this season passed.
It's easy to tell yourself you'll schedule family photos when life slows down.
But with young kids, there is always another birthday, another activity, another busy week.
You don't need to wait for life to feel less busy.
These photographs are worth documenting because life is busy.
